Nigella damascena, commonly known as love-in-a-mist, is a charming annual flower prized for its delicate, lacy foliage and intricate blossoms. Among its many cultivars, ‘Miss Jekyll White’ stands out as a particularly elegant and refined variety, admired by gardeners and horticulturists alike for its pristine white flowers and graceful presence.
Originating from the Mediterranean region, Nigella damascena thrives in temperate climates and is valued both for its ornamental beauty and its historical symbolism of love and innocence. The ‘Miss Jekyll White’ cultivar is named in homage to Gertrude Jekyll, a renowned British garden designer, reflecting its classic and timeless appeal.
This variety produces pure white blooms with fine, thread-like petals surrounded by a mist of delicate, ferny foliage. The flowers are often accompanied by unique seed pods that add architectural interest to the garden once the petals fall. Growing to about 30 to 50 centimeters tall, it makes an ideal border or cottage garden plant, blending effortlessly with other traditional perennials and annuals.
‘Miss Jekyll White’ prefers well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It is easy to grow from seed, which can be sown directly in the garden in early spring. Its charming flowers attract pollinators such as bees, enhancing biodiversity in the garden. Beyond its visual appeal, the plant’s gentle fragrance adds a subtle sensory dimension to outdoor spaces.
In summary, Nigella damascena ‘Miss Jekyll White’ is a sophisticated choice for gardeners seeking a plant that combines delicate beauty with ease of cultivation. Its association with Gertrude Jekyll and its elegant white blooms make it a timeless addition to any garden, evoking a sense of grace and tranquility that enriches outdoor living spaces.

Sowing & Growing
Sow early spring to early summer outdoors where they are to flower. Prepare the ground well and rake to a fine tilth before sowing. Sow 3mm (1/8in) deep in rows 30cm (12in) apart. Germination usually takes approximately 21 days. When large enough to handle thin out to 23cm (9in) apart. They prefer a sunny open site but will grow in most sites and soils. An early autumn sowing can be made in sheltered areas for earlier flowers the following year.
