Nemophila Baby Blue Eyes

£0.89 incl. VAT

Baby blue eyes (Nemophila menziesii), classified as a hardy annual, is a compact, spreading plant with succulent stems and distinctive six-petaled blue flowers. Typically reaching a height of six to twelve inches and spreading over a foot wide, this charming plant boasts romantic, softly-hued blue blossoms that complement other pastel flowers beautifully. Blooming from late winter in regions with moderate temperatures, baby blue eyes continues to showcase its flowers until late spring or early summer.

Ideal for a native wildflower garden, baby blue eyes adds a touch of elegance to rockeries, containers, and border plantings in annual gardens when massed. This delightful plant is particularly notable for being one of the first to display vibrant annual colors as winter’s remnants melt away.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Directly sow your seeds 2mm deep in prepared soil that has been finely raked. Create rows with a spacing of 15cm between them, ensuring an ideal temperature of 20°C for optimal growth. Germination typically occurs within 7-21 days, and you can expect seedlings to emerge 6-8 weeks after sowing. Maintain soil moisture during this period. Once the seedlings appear, thin them to achieve a spacing of 45cm between plants.

For successful growth, provide a fertile, well-drained soil in either full sun or partial shade. Water the plants during dry periods to encourage flowering. In terms of cultivation, deadheading is recommended to extend the flowering period. Allow a few plants to self-seed, while others can be removed and composted in autumn. This approach will help sustain a vibrant and blooming garden.
