Mix 201 UK Native Pure Cornfield

Starting at £1.99

Nothing compares to the awe-inspiring array of color and fascination that comes from sowing a mixture of cornfield annuals. The vibrant cornfield annuals in our seed mix—Cornflower, Corn Marigold, Corn Cockle, Corn Chamomile, Corn Poppy, and Purple Tansy—are now relatively scarce in the wild due to modern advancements in crop weed control. We recommend preparing a settled seedbed, preferably in poor soil and always in full sun, some time before sowing these annuals. This approach allows for a flush of annual weeds, which can then be eradicated through shallow cultivation or spraying before sowing, ideally between mid-August to mid-October.

Spring sowing, starting from early March, will result in smaller plants that flower later compared to an autumn sowing, but they will be just as vibrant. The recommended seed rate for our cornfield mix is 5g per square meter.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Scatter the seeds onto the meticulously prepared level ground, lightly rake them in, and firm the soil if it’s loose by gently treading on it. Among the various annual species, these are the only ones we recommend sowing directly in their final flowering positions. They prove exceptionally easy to cultivate. In theory, with cornfield annuals, if the ground is cultivated again after the seeds are shed, the seeds will grow anew for the next year, allowing the process to be repeated indefinitely.

In practice, however, there is a tendency for other annual weed seeds to accumulate and/or for the cornfield mix to become unbalanced, often dominated by the early-germinating and robust corncockle. To sustain a cornfield annual mix on the same site, we believe it is optimal to collect seeds from the various species and then dig or plough over the site before re-sowing a meticulously prepared mixture.
