Useful Information

To sow Marsh Marigold (Caltha palustris) seeds, sow fresh seeds in autumn directly onto moist, prepared soil near water, or start indoors in trays with very wet compost and provide a cold stratification period (chilling in a fridge or outdoors in a cold frame) to break dormancy, as they need winter cold for germination in spring, often taking time and patience. Keep trays consistently moist (not waterlogged) and plant in a sunny, boggy spot, but be prepared for plants to take 2-3 years to flower, and note that dividing existing plants yields faster results.
1. Direct Sowing (Recommended in Autumn)
  • Timing: Late autumn (October/November).
  • Site Prep: Choose a sunny, damp spot (pond edge, stream bank) and prepare weed-free soil.
  • Sow: Scatter seeds just beneath the soil surface and firm down lightly.
  • Winter: Allow natural winter cold and moisture to trigger germination in spring.
2. Indoor Sowing (Spring)
  • Stratification (Pre-treatment): Mix seeds with moist sand and chill in a fridge (around 4°C) for 2 months, or sow in trays in a cold frame.
  • Sow: After chilling, surface sow onto very wet compost in waterproof trays (or a larger tray with water to keep soil moist).
  • Warm Period: Move to warmth (15-18°C) to encourage germination.
  • Patience: Germination can be slow (weeks to months), so don’t discard trays too soon.
Water: Keep soil consistently moist, but avoid deep water until established.
  • Transplant: Once seedlings are large enough to handle, prick out and pot up into larger pots or plant in their final location (boggy, sunny spot).
  • Maturity: Marsh marigolds can take 2-3 years to flower from seed.
