The Cruciferae family of plants gives us this Lunaria Annua, commonly known as ‘Honesty’, a hardy biennial growing between 60-90cm in height. These long-popular scented plants with white flowers, producing the most attractive, silvery, white papery-moon-like seed heads which have long been used for drying and decoration.

Sowing & Growing
Known for its irregular germination pattern over an extended period, this plant is ideally sown directly in drills where it will grow, at a depth of 3mm and with a spacing of 30cm between drills. Maintain soil moisture until germination, and then thin the seedlings to a 15cm spacing. Allowing the seeds to overwinter in the soil facilitates natural cold stratification.
Alternatively, indoor sowing is possible. Sow the seeds onto a loam-based compost, covering the soil lightly with grit. Keep the environment warm at an ideal temperature of 18°C for 6-8 weeks, followed by a cold stratification period at 5°C for another 6-8 weeks. Repeat this process until the seeds germinate. Plant them outdoors as soon as possible after the danger of frost has passed.
This plant thrives in fertile, moist, and well-drained soil, preferably in partial sun. It requires minimal attention, so avoid overfeeding and refrain from using manure. During autumn, harvest the seedheads. Peel off the green outer covering to reveal the silvery translucent ‘silver pennies.’ If left uncut or not deadheaded, the plant will freely self-seed.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
