Sowing & Growing

Plant chili seeds in a greenhouse between early February and April, as they require warmth and an extended period to fruit. While they can be sown outdoors in warmer southern regions from early April, optimal results are achieved by starting them indoors due to the need for sustained heat. Originating from South America, chili plants thrive in warm conditions, with their ideal germination temperature ranging from 27°C to 32°C. Although some can grow at temperatures above 21°C, germination tends to be more erratic.

Choose a loam-based seed and potting-on compost to provide good drainage, and sow several seeds 5mm deep in a seed tray or pot. Once the plants have developed two true leaves (the second set of leaves), carefully lift them by the true leaves, not the stem, to avoid damage. Support the root system by holding a plant label underneath while grasping the true leaves.

For optimal results, use a thermostatically-controlled propagator for germination, although a heated tray/mat can also suffice. Afterward, transplant the seedlings into a 9cm pot until they reach a height of 8cm-15cm. Finally, re-pot them into a 3L/4L pot or directly into the ground if there’s open soil in your greenhouse or polytunnel.

Be mindful of greenhouse temperatures, as exceeding 36°C may cause flowers to drop off and prevent fruit setting. Consider shading to regulate temperature and mist the greenhouse twice daily to maintain humidity. Water the chili plants from the top using a spray bottle, ensuring they receive adequate but not excessive watering.
