Delphinium ‘Pacific Giants’ is an old distinguished variety that produces strong spikes of semi-double blooms in a dreamy blend of colours. They are clump forming perennials, with fleshy crowns and tall spikes of closely grouped cup shaped flowers with prominent eyes (or bees). Their palmate and lobed leaves are usually below the spikes. They are excellent for cutting, ideal as feature plants, they add structure and presence to the back of any perennial border or cottage garden. Bring a touch of nostalgia back to the garden, they are worth almost any effort to grow because they are so beautiful.
The ‘Round Table’ strain is an advance so far as colour is concerned, for apart from the many blue shades, there are purples, pinks, lilacs and whites, many with a dark central ‘bee’. The Round Table series contains nine colours, and a mix each with a cultivar name relevant to Camelot.
Delphinium ‘Galahad’ is a subtle and beautiful delphinium with spires of elegant white blooms. The florets are closely placed on tall stems. Planted in groups of three or more, it will form a dramatic backdrop to any mixed or herbaceous border.
This is ‘the’ Delphinium, a magnificent and noble hardy perennial plant for the back of the border, and a favourite with everyone. Huge 3” double summer flowers are excellent for cutting. When first flower spike is removed immediately after bloom, additional spikes quickly form. Plants grow 4-7 ft tall, need staking to protect heavy flower spikes from the wind. The palmate-shaped leaves are large.
Germination; Sow indoors in spring. Sow under glass autumn-winter. Indoors, surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of vermiculite. Place in a polythene bag and pop in the fridge at 4°C for 3 weeks then remove to warmth for germination, ideal temp. 15-18°C. A propagator may be used. Keep out of direct sunlight. Germination takes 1-2 months approx. Transplant seedlings into a cell tray and once grown pot on into an 8cm pot. Liquid feed. Acclimatise and plant out from May. Seed can be sown autumn-winter, surface sow, just cover with vermiculite, place somewhere dry and frost free, a garage or greenhouse is ideal. In spring when green shoots appear water and keep in a bright frost free area until danger of frost has passed.
Growing; Prefers a fertile well-drained soil in full sun. Shelter from strong winds and stake well. Apply a liquid feed every 2 weeks in the growing season. For best flower spikes thin shoots when 7cm tall to leave a minimum of 2-3 shoots on young plants and 5-7 on established plants.
Cultivation; Deadhead by cutting spent flower spikes back to small flowering side shoots. This will encourage further blooms. Cut down all growth to ground level once it has withered in autumn. Propagate by taking pencil thin basal cuttings in early spring.
