Cornish Candyfloss Mint Plant

Starting at £4.99

Cornish Candyfloss Mint (Mentha villosa ‘Cornish Candyfloss’) is an enchanting, relatively rare mint cultivar highly celebrated among herb collectors. It is prized for its whimsical, nostalgic aroma that genuinely mimics the sweet, airy scent of spun sugar at a seaside fairground.

Botanical Features

  • Foliage & Colour: The plant yields large, broad, oval-shaped leaves. They are a distinctly paler, softer mid-green compared to the dark, sharp foliage of standard peppermints.

  • Texture: True to its likely Mentha villosa (Woolly Mint) lineage, the leaves are soft and slightly fuzzy or velvety to the touch.

  • Stems: It features delicate, soft-pinkish stems that provide beautiful ornamental contrast against the pale green foliage.

  • Growth Habit: It is an exceptionally vigorous and large grower with an open, spreading habit.

Scent & Flavour Profile

While the initial aromatic burst is sweet and sugary, the actual flavour profile is grounded and sophisticated:

  • The Scent: Light, sweet, and distinctly reminiscent of fairground candyfloss.

  • The Taste: Mellow, gentle, and rounded. It lacks the sharp, biting punch of high-menthol mints, offering a smooth mintyness with subtle sweet overtones instead.

Cultivation Requirements

Parameter Preference
Sunlight Full sun to partial shade (Sun maximizes the essential oils that produce the sweet scent).
Soil & Water Prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil.
Invasiveness Very High. Because it is a robust, large-leaved variety, it requires active containment.
Best For Gentle herbal teas, garnishing light fruit desserts, or as a sensory “nibbling plant” in the garden.

Grower’s Note: Due to its sheer vigour, always pot ‘Cornish Candyfloss’ in a broad container or use a sunken root barrier if placing it in a communal herb bed, otherwise it will rapidly outcompete smaller herbs.
