Corncockle

£0.59 incl. VAT

Agrostemma githago, a cornfield annual, the common corn-cockle (also written “corncockle” and “corn cockle” and known locally simply as “the corncockle”), is a slender pink flower of European wheat fields. In the 19th century, it was reported as a very common weed of wheat fields and its seeds were inadvertently included in harvested wheat seed and then resown the following season. It is very likely that until the 20th century, most wheat contained some corncockle seed.

Sowing & Growing

Corncockle (Agrostemma githago) is an annual wildflower that is native to Europe and can be grown easily from seed. Here are the steps to sow corncockle seeds in the UK:

  1. Choose a suitable location: Corncockle prefers well-draining soil and a sunny position, but it can also tolerate partial shade.
  2. Prepare the soil: Clear the area of any weeds or debris, and loosen the soil to a depth of about 10cm. You can also mix in some compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil quality.
  3. Sow the seeds: Scatter the corncockle seeds over the soil, making sure they are evenly distributed. You can also mix the seeds with sand to help with even distribution. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, and water them gently.
  4. Water and care: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged until the seeds have germinated. Once the seedlings are established, water only during dry periods. Corncockle does not require fertilizer or additional care.
  5. Thin the seedlings: Once the seedlings have grown a few inches tall, thin them out so that they are spaced about 30cm apart. This will allow each plant enough space to grow and thrive.
  6. Enjoy the flowers: Corncockle will begin to flower in the summer, producing pretty pink or purple flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. You can also cut the flowers for indoor arrangements, but make sure to leave some on the plant to self-seed for the following year.

Overall, corncockle is an easy-to-grow wildflower that can add beauty and interest to your garden. Enjoy watching it grow and attract wildlife!
