Chrysanthemum segetum is a distinctive annual plant of short to medium height, easily recognizable during its blooming period from June to October. It boasts large, vibrant yellow compound flower heads resembling daisies. The leaves, slightly fleshy and lobed, possess a smooth texture and are adorned with a waxy layer, imparting a greenish-blue hue. While it was previously identified under the botanical name Chrysanthemum segetum, some contemporary sources, such as Sell and Murrell, categorize it as Xantophthalmum segetum. Renowned for its uncomplicated cultivation, this hardy annual is particularly well-suited for gardeners of all skill levels and serves as an excellent choice for children’s gardening projects.

Sowing & Growing
To successfully sow wildflower seeds, the designated area must be cleared of any unwanted vegetation, including weeds, grass, or existing plants. The soil should be adequately broken up to prepare an optimal seedbed. In cases where existing plants were removed, it is advisable to repeat the clearance process after a waiting period. Subsequently, rake and flatten the soil, either by walking over it or using a roller.
When it comes to sowing the seeds, an approximate amount of 2g/m² of the chosen single-species wildflower seed is recommended. The seed should be lightly covered, ensuring a depth of approximately 0.5cm without burying it. After sowing, achieve good seed-to-soil contact by walking over, pressing, or rolling the area. The newly sown area should be watered generously in the initial weeks to maintain consistent moisture levels. To prevent damage to young plants, minimize traffic over the freshly sown area. Lastly, hand-remove any weeds that may appear.
In terms of maintenance, regular watering is crucial, especially during dry weather conditions, to preserve soil moisture. Optionally, a cut can be made once in spring and again in autumn, with the removal of all cuttings.
