This is a very attractive, stocky, vigorous plant with leaves with purple veins and spikes of dark rose-coloured flowers. It has a warm, spicy, cinnamon-like aroma and flavour with just a hint of cloves that lends itself to dishes where a sweet, spicy taste is sought such as fruit salads, chutney, sweet-and-sour dishes and chicken marinades. 2½ft (75cm) Half Hardy Annual.

Sowing & Growing
Can be sown all year round indoors. For outdoor cultivation sow Feb-Jun. Sow seed on the surface of free draining seed compost. Cover with a light sprinkling of vermiculite or compost. Propagate 15-25°C. Germination takes 14-21 days. Compost should be very lightly watered as prone to powdery mildew if too moist. When large enough to handle transplant to 8cm pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed.
