Castor Oil Plant 5 Seeds Ricinus communis Gibsonii

£1.50

Castor oil plants (Ricinus communis), also known as castor beans, are now widespread across various parts of the world, thriving in both temperate and tropical regions. Originally from Northeast Africa and the Middle East, these plants are now cultivated globally as ornamental plants. Castor beans belong to the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. The genus name Ricinus is Latin for ‘tick’, alluding to the resemblance between the plant’s mature seeds and certain tick species when fully grown.

In frost-prone areas, castor oil plants typically grow as annuals, reaching heights of up to 6 meters within just 3 to 4 months under optimal conditions. In tropical and subtropical regions, they grow as perennials, becoming woody and potentially reaching heights of 13 meters over several years. The leaves of the castor bean plant are large and lobed, ranging from 30 to 70 cm in length, and typically dark green, though some varieties feature red or purple hues. The petiole and veins are often red in most varieties. The leaves are characteristically palmate with five to 11 lobes and have serrated margins. Additionally, castor oil plants form small stipules surrounding each stem.

Please note: Seeds/plants are toxic if eaten.
