Sowing & Growing
While the excitement to plant your basil is palpable, a little patience will go a long way! Originating in the tropics, basil is not equipped to thrive in cold weather. For direct sowing, it’s best to wait until all frost risks have subsided, then space the seeds 1⁄2″ to 1″ apart in well-draining soil. If you prefer starting as transplants, sow basil seeds in a seed starter mix six weeks before the last frost date. Provide warmth, ample sunlight, and good ventilation during this phase, ensuring that the growing medium remains barely moist—almost on the drier side.
Once ready, transplant the basil seedlings to an outdoor sunny spot with moderately fertile soil after the last frost. Optimal garden spacing is 10″ to 12″ apart to facilitate proper growth conditions. To encourage leaf production and a bushier plant, periodically pinch back the tops and flower buds. When harvesting, prioritize the largest leaves from the top and sides. For nourishment, occasional feeding with kelp or fish emulsion is recommended, as chemical fertilizers are not favored by herbs, including basil.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
