Asclepias Curassavica Red

£0.79 incl. VAT

Asclepias curassavica, commonly referred to as tropical milkweed, is a flowering plant belonging to the milkweed genus, Asclepias. These evergreen perennial subshrubs typically reach heights of up to 1 metre with pale grey stems. The lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate leaves are arranged oppositely on the stems, concluding in acuminate or acute tips. Similar to other members of the genus, the plant’s sap is milky. The flowers form in cymes, with 10-20 flowers in each cluster, showcasing purple or red corollas and yellow or orange corona lobes. Flowering is observed nearly year-round. The fusiform-shaped fruits, measuring 5–10 cm in length, are termed follicles. Inside these follicles are tan to brown ovate seeds, about 6–7 mm (0.24–0.28 in) long. The seeds possess silky hairs that enable them to float on air currents when the follicles split open.

Sowing & Growing

Sow the seeds on moist, finely prepared soil that has been raked to create a fine tilth. Gently press the seeds into the soil and lightly cover them. The ideal temperature for germination is between 20-23°C, and it typically takes 14-21 days. Once germinated, grow the plants at a temperature of 17-20°C. Thin the plants to a spacing of 30-50cm. If desired, you can start the seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost.

In terms of growing conditions, this plant prefers well-drained loamy soil and thrives in full sun, especially in frost-free areas. After flowering, reduce watering, and keep the plant almost dry during the winter. It has the versatility to be grown as a houseplant and can be moved outside during the summer. In terms of cultivation, this plant will self-seed freely in areas with warm winters. To control self-seeding, deadhead the flowers as needed.
