Arctotis stands out as one of the most vibrant among daisy-like flowers, and ‘Harlequin’ is a stunning variety within this category. It boasts large, brightly coloured flowers that span a spectrum from cream and yellow to red, orange, crimson, and purple. The blooms exhibit various combinations, some featuring contrasting tones and a luminous sheen. Originating from South Africa, these flowers have the unique characteristic of closing in dull weather and late in the day, only to open again with the return of the sun. Despite their delicate appearance, they are classified as tender perennials.

Sowing & Growing
Sow from February to April for blooming between July and October. While seeds can be directly sown in their final growing location, superior results are achieved by initiating early indoor sowing, followed by transplanting outdoors once the soil has warmed. Start indoor sowing under glass in early spring, utilizing a quality seed compost. Gently cover the seeds with compost or vermiculite and firm down, with the added benefit of sealing in a polythene bag after sowing to facilitate germination.
Typically, germination occurs within 21 to 35 days at a temperature range of 16 to 21°C. Once the seedlings are sizable enough to handle, transplant them and foster their growth in cooler conditions. Gradually accustom the plants to outdoor conditions over 10 to 15 days before planting them out, ensuring all risk of frost has passed. Plant them 30cm apart in a sunny spot with well-drained, light soil.
