    • Planting: Yellow Moon can be planted in either autumn or spring, depending on the supplier and your climate. The bulbs are noted for good storability and for being relatively easy to grow.
    • Spacing and care: As with many shallots, provide a sunny, well-drained site. Work in compost or grit if your soil is heavy to improve drainage. Various seed suppliers give similar guidance on planting in well-drained soil with full sun.
    • Disease and bolting: Yellow Moon is highlighted for disease resistance and bolting resistance, which helps for spring plantings where bolting can be an issue with other varieties. (
    • Harvest and storage: Bulbs are described as storing well for several months, making them good for long-term use in the kitchen. Harvest times vary by climate and planting window, but they’re promoted as an easy crop for long storage.

Useful Information

Planting

Cultivate shallots by arranging them in rows within any well-drained and firm soil, basking in the warmth of full sun. Enhance the planting area weeks ahead by blending in well-rotted garden compost to elevate both drainage and soil fertility. It’s advisable to avoid planting shallots in freshly manured soil. In areas prone to excessive moisture, consider cultivating shallots in raised beds for optimal results.

When using sets to grow shallots, ensure the bulb tips protrude just above the soil surface during planting. Maintain a spacing of 18cm (7″) between individual bulbs and 30cm (12″) between rows, fostering a conducive environment for healthy shallot development. Follow these guidelines for a successful shallot harvest in your garden.
