The vibrant Mirabilis Jalapa earned its common name “Four O’Clocks” due to the distinctive behavior of its flowers, which open in the late afternoon and remain so until the morning. Interestingly, on cloudy days, these flowers may not close at all. Another commonly used name, “Marvel of Peru,” likely originates from their native roots in the tropical regions of South America. The term “Mirabilis” itself means wonderful in Latin. Typically grown as a half-hardy annual despite being a perennial, this plant forms robust, bushy structures, but it’s essential to note that its seeds are poisonous if ingested.
Given their evening blooming pattern, Four O’Clocks are best planted in areas where you can fully enjoy their presence and catch a whiff of their fragrance. Consider placing them in pots on decks, along walkways, or on the edges of seating areas. They also integrate well with other plants, creating a pleasant underplanting effect. Additionally, the tubular flowers of Four O’Clocks attract hummingbirds, adding another layer of charm to these delightful plants.

Sowing & Growing
Four O’Clocks are relatively unfussy about soil pH, thriving well in a neutral to slightly acidic soil. Preferring rich, well-draining conditions, these plants, however, may undergo dormancy in dry environments.
When it comes to sowing, the recommended timeframe is from February to April. Seeds should be sown under cover, on the surface of lightly firmed, moist compost in pots or trays. Ensure adequate coverage by using compost or vermiculite. Germination typically occurs within 7-21 days when placed in a propagator or a warm spot with temperatures ranging from 20-25°C (68-77°F).
Following germination, the next steps involve transplanting the seedlings into pots or trays. To prepare them for outdoor planting, gradually acclimate the plants to cooler conditions over a few weeks. Plant them outdoors, spacing them 30cm (12″) apart in full sun.
The blooming period for Four O’Clocks extends from July to September, gracing gardens with their vibrant flowers.
A helpful tip for maximum enjoyment: plant them in an area where you can relish the delightful fragrance they emit during the evening hours.
