Sowing & Growing
Sowing Giant Poppy Seeds (Papaver Somniferum Giganteum) in the UK is a straightforward process. Start by choosing a sunny location with well-drained soil, avoiding low-lying areas to prevent waterlogging. Prepare the soil by ensuring it is slightly alkaline; add lime if needed. Remove weeds and stones, and rake the soil to a fine texture.
In late spring or early summer, when the soil is warm, sow the poppy seeds directly into the soil. Scatter them thinly and lightly rake the area to cover with a thin layer of soil, ensuring not to bury the seeds too deeply.
Gently water the area to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, as excess water can cause the seeds to rot.
Once the seedlings emerge and reach a few inches in height, thin them out to around 30cm apart to provide sufficient space for each plant. Remove excess seedlings by pulling them out or cutting them off at ground level with scissors.
Care for the plants by watering regularly during dry spells and feeding with a general-purpose fertilizer every few weeks. Protect the plants from slugs and snails, which can damage leaves and flowers.
Harvest the seeds when the poppy heads dry out and turn brown. Cut the heads off the plants and hang them upside down in a warm, dry place to allow the seeds to fully dry. Once dry, shake the seeds out of the heads and store them in an airtight container.
Remember that poppies are considered a controlled substance in the UK, and it is illegal to extract opium from them. However, growing poppies as an ornamental plant is legal, and their large, showy flowers can add a splash of colour to your garden.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
