Common Mallow, also known as Striped Mallow, is a beloved perennial in traditional cottage gardens. Resembling its cousin, the Hollyhock, it showcases satin-like flowers in a delicate lavender-purple hue, adorned with exotic deep maroon veins. This plant forms an erect, bushy mound, potentially requiring staking in nutrient-rich soil. With a height range of 60-120cm and a spread of 45-60cm, it’s a captivating addition.
Considered a short-lived perennial or biennial, it often flowers prolifically in its first year, sometimes to the point of exhausting itself, only to return the following year from self-sown seedlings. Whether in containers or the sunny border, this plant shines, particularly in colder regions due to its extended blooming season. Furthermore, its flowers are a magnet for butterflies, enhancing its appeal.

Sowing & Growing
Sowing Period: Plant seeds from February to June or September to October. For optimal results, sow the seeds in a cold frame during spring or autumn, but direct sowing in the desired flowering area is also viable. The seeds exhibit quick and straightforward germination.
Indoor Sowing: Fill pots or trays with a peaty compost. After soaking the pots in water and allowing them to drain, sow the seeds on the surface and cover with a fine layer of sieved compost. Maintain surface moisture without waterlogging. Typically, germination occurs within 7 to 21 days. Once the seedlings are sufficiently large, transplant them into 7cm (3in) pots. Plant them in their permanent positions during early summer.
Direct Sowing: Alternatively, sow seeds in late spring in a well-raked bed with fine, crumbly soil. Scatter the seeds, lightly rake the surface, and firmly press down. Keep the area well-watered and weed-free during the initial stages. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 45cm (18in) apart.
