Watercress

£0.79

Watercress, often perceived as challenging to cultivate, is surprisingly easy to grow. This dark green herb boasts a peppery flavour and is packed with essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C and iron, making it a nutritious addition to any garden. While it thrives in moist conditions to deter premature flowering, watercress can be successfully grown in indoor windowsill troughs with ample moisture or in larger outdoor pots. With proper care, it yields a bountiful harvest from summer to nearly Christmas, and contrary to common belief, it doesn’t necessarily demand a continuous flow of running water.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Sow sparsely in the middle of spring when the soil has sufficiently warmed, spacing the seeds 8cm apart in rows and lightly covering them with soil. Alternatively, it can be sown indoors throughout the year. The chosen location should not be excessively wet or waterlogged; however, this can be created on pond margins by burying a bucket or lining an area with a plastic membrane. Placing a pot or trough in a sizable saucer or tray with water is also a suitable alternative. Thin out the seedlings, leaving 8-10 cm between them, and ensure they receive saturated watering throughout the season. Keep the area free of weeds. Once established, harvest by regularly cutting the tops with scissors to promote regrowth. Be cautious not to cut too close to the stems to allow the plant to reshoot effectively.
