Valerian

£0.79 incl. VAT

Valerian is an appealing upright plant characterized by pinnate foliage and clusters of fragrant, pale pink flowers during the summer months. As a perennial flowering plant native to Europe and Asia, Valerian boasts a mature height of 1.5 meters, especially during the summer when it produces sweetly scented pink or white flowers that attract various fly species, particularly hoverflies. With its striking fragrance, Valerian becomes especially notable in early summer when its flowers bloom, making it an excellent choice for cut flowers. Often planted alongside low, mound-forming herbs and flowers, Valerian can reach a height of 1.5 meters (5 feet) when in full bloom.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Sow indoors by surface sowing onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Gently press the seeds into the soil without covering. Maintain an ideal temperature of 13-18°C for germination, which typically takes 15-20 days. Transplant seedlings to 8cm pots when they are large enough to handle, and acclimatize them before planting outdoors with 90cm spacing once the danger of frost has passed. Alternatively, seeds can be sown directly where they are to flower from March to May.

These plants prefer partial shade in any well-drained soil. Keep the soil moist but avoid overwatering. Taller plants may require staking. The plants have a tendency to self-sow freely, so deadhead if you want to prevent volunteer seedlings next year.
