Pictorial Dierama Blackbird

£2.50 incl. VAT

Blackbird is the most famous variety of Dierama, sporting dark arching bells over slender foliage. Going by the common name “Angel’s fishing rod”, these plants can grow up to 1.2m tall and sway back and forth in a breeze. The flowers are very attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, while the overwintering tussocks of leaves provide important, sheltered hibernation sites for many beneficial predatory invertebrates such as ladybirds.
This handy pictorial packet contains approximately 10 seeds and features full sowing and growing instructions on the reverse.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

These can be sowed indoors at any time of the year but be warned; germination can be erratic taking between 1-3 months and can also sometimes need a bout of cold stratification so this might test your patience; but it’s worth it, we think.

Sow 5mm deep into moist well-drained seed compost, your ideal temperature is 18C but allow 5-6 waiting time. If nothing is happening it very well might be dormant, so this is when you will cold stratify. Move to 4-5C for 4-6 weeks then move back to 12C for germination.

Once your seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow on individually in a frost-free place, greenhouse or directly outside. The seedlings will much prefer being planted out rather than pot grown.

Remember when planting this prefers a humus-rich, well-drained soil in full sun. Don’t allow the soil to dry out in summer or become waterlogged in winter. Will appreciate a general feed in spring if desired.
