Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Sow from February to June, either indoors or undercover. Peas thrive in well-drained, fertile soil that received manure the previous autumn. Indoors, sow in modules or guttering (with blocked ends to secure the compost), placing seeds 5cm (2in) deep and 5cm (2in) apart. For direct outdoor sowing, use a flat-bottomed, weed-free drill or a pot/container from April onward, planting seeds 5cm (2in) deep and 10cm (4in) wide. Space seeds 5cm (2in) apart in drills, covering with soil and firming down with a rake. Maintain 60cm spacing between drills for convenient picking.

Protect early outdoor seedlings from birds and promote growth with fleece or cloche coverings. Once seedlings from indoor or guttering planting are well-established and hardened off, transplant them to their final position. For gutter-grown plants, gently push the soil/compost into a trench of similar dimensions and firm down, watering adequately. Space modular plants 5cm (2in) apart in beds or containers.

After seedlings establish, water only in very dry conditions, as excessive watering at this stage may favour leafy growth over pod development. Increase watering when flowers appear to encourage pod formation. Mulch heavily around the base of established seedlings to suppress weeds.

Harvest the peas from May to September.
