Nemophila Penny Black stands out as an excellent and easily cultivated annual, boasting an abundance of lush, deep purple to black blooms with silver edges. These delightful flowers adorn low, ground-hugging plants that exhibit a slightly trailing habit, making them perfect for containers or as an attractive border in bedding and garden borders. While many photographs may exaggerate their size, these small, 2-3 cm wide (1″) flowers are truly charming. Adored by the Victorians for their dainty two-tone colour and airy, light green foliage, Nemophila Penny Black is particularly well-suited for shaded areas, as its name suggests, with “nemophila” translating to “shade-lover.”

Sowing & Growing
Directly sow the seeds by planting them 2mm deep into prepared soil that has been finely raked. Arrange the rows with a spacing of 15cm between them. The optimal temperature for germination is around 20°C, and this process usually takes 7-21 days. Expect seedlings to emerge 6-8 weeks after sowing. It’s important to maintain soil moisture during this period. As the seedlings grow, thin them to achieve a spacing of 45cm.
In terms of growth, these plants prefer fertile, well-drained soil and can thrive in both full sun and partial shade. To encourage flowering, ensure adequate watering during dry periods. As part of cultivation practices, deadhead the plants to extend the flowering period. Allow a few plants to self-seed, while others can be removed and composted in the autumn.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
