While many associate liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) primarily with the confectionery industry, its roots play a significant role in traditional medicine. Despite the time-intensive process of cultivating liquorice roots the plant is remarkably easy to care for and boasts ornamental charm, making the waiting period enjoyable. Fully matured, the liquorice plant can attain a height of 60 to 180cm. The light brown and woody roots and rhizome are the key components utilized, with roots extending up to an impressive 12 meters.
A single plant yields 30 to 40 kilograms of root mass. Belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae), the liquorice plant exhibits blue-violet flowers that bloom in the latter part of the year, from August to October. Notably, the pinnate formation of its leaves adds to its distinctive features, with multiple leaves growing along each stem. Embrace the journey of cultivating liquorice, where the rewards extend beyond the delectable, offering insights into both gardening and holistic wellness.

Sowing & Growing
For an early start on growing liquorice, consider sowing the seeds indoors around the end of February. To enhance their germination rate, remember to refrigerate the seeds for two to four weeks before soaking them in water for an additional 24 hours. Once this preparation is complete, place the seeds in a container and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Opt for a loose soil, preferably low in nutrient content, such as seedling compost at this stage. The seeds are best suited for an environment where they cannot utilize additional nutrients from the compost. Keep the container in a warm location, approximately 20°C, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not saturated. Within 15 to 30 days, you’ll witness the seeds beginning to germinate, marking the exciting start of your liquorice cultivation journey.
