£0.39

A very showy and attractive ornamental grass recognized as Squirrel Tail grass or foxtail barley, this ornamental grass features beardless seeds and blooms from July to September. The initially green spikes undergo a charming transformation, turning pink as they mature, providing an appealing contrast in borders. Widely appreciated by flower arrangers, it is often employed as a dried flower. Additionally, this ornamental grass has a propensity to freely re-seed. Can grow up to 20 inches tall.

Sowing & Growing

Sow the seeds of Squirrel Tail Grass in March to May or September to October in well-drained soil, maintaining a temperature around 20ºC (68ºF). While germination typically occurs easily in spring, it can occasionally be slow and erratic, so exercise patience.

Once the seedlings reach a sufficient size, gather a small clump and transplant them into a one-litre pot filled with gritty compost. This will encourage bushy growth, and the plants will be ready for transplantation into the garden during the summer.

Grow the grass in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Sow the seeds at a depth of 6mm (¼in) in rows spaced 30cm (12in) apart in finely tilled soil. Thin out the seedlings, leaving them 23cm (9in) apart. Replant the removed seedlings.

Cultivation involves feeding in spring, treating them like ordinary perennials with a single dressing of general fertilizer. While grasses generally thrive even without an annual feed, the more nitrogen they receive, the lusher and taller they may grow. This spreading habit is suitable for fields but can be too much in a garden, potentially impacting flower quality.

The feathery flower spikes are excellent for cutting and drying if harvested early. These grasses typically produce abundant seeds, ensuring their return year after year if in a suitable location. They are particularly suitable for seaside plantings due to their salt tolerance but should be kept away from livestock as the barbed awns around the seeds may pose issues.
