Dahlia Sir Alfred Ramsay Fresh Tubers

Starting at £4.99

The Sir Alf Ramsey dahlia is a well-loved Giant Decorative or Dinnerplate dahlia, named for the famed England football manager. It’s renowned for its enormous, showy blooms, reaching up to about 25 cm (10 inches) across, with lilac-pink petals that fade to a creamy white center. This variety is ideal for borders, exhibitions, and long-lasting cut arrangements, and it’s highly sought after for summer displays. To achieve its striking flowers from summer through autumn, plant in full sun, in fertile, well-drained soil, and provide staking for the tall stems. In colder climates, lift and store the tubers overwinter to protect them.

Useful Information

Growing Tips:

  • Light Requirements: Dahlias  thrive in full sun, so choose a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day for optimal growth.
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil is essential. Adding organic matter can improve soil quality and provide the nutrients needed for healthy growth.
  • Watering: Regular watering is important, especially during dry spells, to keep the foliage lush and the flowers blooming beautifully.

Planting Tips:

When planting Dahlia tubers, consider the following:

  1. Timing: Plant tubers in spring after the last frost date, when the soil has warmed up.
  2. Depth: Plant the tubers about 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) deep, with the eyes facing up.
  3. Spacing: Space the tubers about 30-45 cm (12-18 inches) apart to allow for their growth and spread.

Care and Maintenance:

  • Fertilisation: Apply a balanced fertilizer every few weeks during the growing season to promote healthy growth and abundant blooms.
  • Staking: Taller varieties may require staking to support the heavy blooms and prevent them from toppling over.
  • Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming throughout the season.

Incorporating Dahlias into your garden will not only enhance its aesthetic appeal but also provide a stunning display of colour and texture throughout the summer and into the  Autumn. With its vibrant flowers and unique foliage, this dahlia is sure to be a cherished addition to your landscape!
