Sowing & Growing
Initiate cucumber seed sowing under cover from late April, preferably inside the house or using a heated propagator. Plant the seeds approximately 2 cm deep in the finest seed sowing compost, as cucumber germination can be a bit challenging. Place one cucumber seed per small pot or seed cell, and ensure the compost remains consistently moist. Germination typically occurs within 7-10 days at a temperature of about 17-20 degrees Celsius or even higher. For optimal results, it’s recommended to germinate cucumbers at around 27 degrees Celsius. The key with cucumbers is to transfer the seedlings to a cooler environment after germination to slow down initial growth. Once the plants have developed 3-4 pairs of true leaves, acclimate them to the conditions of the greenhouse or polytunnel.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into larger pots and keep them indoors until the last chance of frost has passed. Cucumbers prefer a sunny location and well-drained, rich soil. They can be grown in a greenhouse, polytunnel, conservatory, or in a very warm, sheltered spot in your garden or allotment. Ensure adequate watering throughout the growth period, especially during flowering, as drying out can negatively impact flower setting. Additionally, feed the plants weekly to promote the highest production. This variety is highly prolific, with one plant capable of producing an abundance of cucumbers. In optimal conditions, consider making cucumber water, an excellent and refreshing drink for summer evenings after a long day of hard work in the garden.
