Carol Mint (Mentha variety) is a distinct cultivar within the expansive Mentha genus, prized primarily by herb collectors and culinary enthusiasts for its intensely sharp flavour profile and striking aromatic presence.
Foliage: The plant produces medium-sized, oval (ovate) leaves. They are a vibrant light green colour with a distinctly wrinkled appearance due to deep veining.
Texture: Unlike some of the slick, glabrous (hairless) mint varieties, Carol Mint leaves are slightly hairy (pubescent), giving them a soft, tactile finish.
Stems: In keeping with the classic hallmark of the Lamiaceae family, it features tough, square stems that grow aggressively from an underground network of fleshy rhizomes.
The defining characteristic of Carol Mint is its exceptionally sharp flavour. It hits the palate with a robust, punchy clarity that is less sweet than traditional spearmint but retains a highly clean, piercing coolness. This makes it an excellent choice for savoury applications, intense herbal infusions, or as a contrasting garnish in heavy dishes.
| Parameter | Requirements |
| Growth Habit | Rapid, spreading perennial |
| Sunlight | Full sun to partial shade |
| Soil & Moisture | Thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil; highly adaptable to clay, loam, or sand. |
| Invasiveness | High. Like most mints, its vigorous runners will quickly colonize a garden bed. |
Pro-Tip for Growers: Because of its aggressive spreading habit, it is highly recommended to grow Carol Mint in a dedicated container or a sunken pot to restrict its root run and prevent it from overtaking your garden. Regular harvesting of the top sprigs will stimulate denser, bushier growth.
