Sowing & Growing
Carnation violets, also known as Dianthus barbatus, are beautiful flowers that can be grown from seed. If you want to grow carnation violets in your garden, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to sow carnation violet seeds.
The best time to sow carnation violet seeds is in the early spring or late summer. This is when the temperatures are cool and the soil is moist. You can start the seeds indoors or directly sow them in the garden. If you’re starting them indoors, use seed trays or small pots and fill them with a good quality potting soil. Moisten the soil and sprinkle the seeds on top, then cover them with a thin layer of soil. Keep the soil moist and place the trays or pots in a warm, sunny location.
If you’re sowing the seeds directly in the garden, prepare the soil by removing any weeds, rocks or debris. Loosen the soil and add compost or well-rotted manure to improve the soil structure and fertility. Scatter the seeds thinly over the soil surface and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Water the soil gently and keep it moist until the seedlings emerge.
Carnation violets typically bloom in the late spring or early summer, depending on when they were sown. The flowers are very fragrant and come in a variety of colors including pink, red, white and purple. They make great cut flowers and can be used in bouquets or arrangements.
Carnation violets prefer cooler temperatures and can tolerate light frosts. Ideal temperatures for germination are between 60-70°F (15-21°C). Once the seedlings emerge, they should be thinned to about 6-8 inches apart. Water the plants regularly and fertilize them with a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks. Deadhead the spent flowers to encourage more blooms throughout the season. With proper care, your carnation violet plants will thrive and provide you with beautiful blooms all season long.
