Sowing & Growing
To cultivate carnations successfully, sow the seeds indoors under cover at a temperature of 20°F, starting 8-10 weeks before the anticipated last frost for flowering within the same year. Alternatively, sow until early August as a biennial, expecting blooms in the following year. The seeds require light for germination, so press them lightly into the soil surface without covering them, and ensure the soil stays consistently moist. Germination typically occurs within a span of 10-14 days.
Carnation plants prove to be effortlessly manageable. Avoid overhead watering until the first true leaves emerge. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into separate pots or trays. Once the danger of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors. For an impressive display, plant groups of 3-4 seedlings, spacing them about 12 inches apart. Optimal growth occurs in full sun and well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Water as needed during dry periods and provide additional nourishment through feeding once or twice a month while the plants are flowering.
