Organic Borage

£0.69

Approximately 25 seeds are contained in 1g of Borage. Borage, an annual herb, showcases charming vivid blue star-shaped flowers and has hairy grey-green leaves. With a growth height ranging from 30 to 50cm, it proves remarkably easy to cultivate. The leaves of Borage can be a delightful addition to salads, imparting a refreshing cucumber-like taste. The attractive flowers, on the other hand, can be frozen in ice cubes to add a touch of luxury to beverages like Pimms or simply used to enhance the visual appeal of salads. While Borage tends to self-seed readily, offering a potential advantage, one can manage its spread by deadheading before the flowers set seed. This herb is particularly favoured by bees due to its nectar-rich flowers, making it an excellent companion plant. Its ability to attract insects contributes to the fertilization of surrounding crops, making it an ideal companion for tomatoes.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Borage thrives in poor light and well-drained soil, particularly in a sunny location. However, it can adapt to clayey soil as well. It’s important to note that overly rich soil may cause Borage to grow excessively tall and straggly instead of adopting a bushy, flower-filled form.

Sow Borage seeds indoors or outdoors from February to April, with outdoor sowing extending from the end of April to May. Initiate the sowing process by planting seeds into small pots in February, keeping them under cover at around 15°C. After the last frosts, typically taking about 7 days, transplant the seedlings outdoors. Alternatively, direct sow seeds outside from late April to May, with some protection against the cold if needed. Expect germination within 2-3 weeks.

To manage Borage effectively, it is advisable to remove flowers before they set seed, as the plant tends to self-seed readily unless an abundance of new seedlings is desired.

Borage can be harvested from May to August, offering an extended period for utilization and enjoyment.
