Sowing & Growing
Rudbeckia is a beautiful and easy-to-grow perennial plant that is native to North America. It is a member of the Asteraceae family, also known as the daisy family, and is commonly referred to as the Black Eyed Susan. Here are some guidelines on how to successfully sow and care for Rudbeckia in the UK.
The best time to sow Rudbeckia in the UK is from late winter to early spring, between February and April. The seeds can be sown indoors or directly into the soil. If sowing indoors, use a good-quality seed compost and sow the seeds thinly on the surface. Cover the seeds lightly with compost, and water gently. Place the tray in a warm and bright location, but not in direct sunlight. If sowing outdoors, prepare the soil by digging and adding some well-rotted manure or compost. Sow the seeds thinly on the surface and cover lightly with soil.
Rudbeckia typically blooms from July to September, producing large, bright yellow flowers with a black centre. The flowers are about 8cm in diameter and are borne on upright stems. They are great for attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies to your garden. The plant is also deer resistant, making it a great option for gardens where deer may be present.
This plant prefers well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It can tolerate a range of temperatures, but it prefers mild temperatures between 15°C to 25°C. It is a hardy perennial plant that can survive cold winters in the UK. In terms of maintenance, Rudbeckia is a low-maintenance plant that requires little attention. Water regularly during dry spells and cut back the dead flowers to encourage further blooming. It is also a good idea to divide the plant every few years to promote healthy growth and prevent overcrowding.
