How trends evolve! In less than two decades, this plant, once confined to wild gardens, has undergone a transformation. Now, amidst the burgeoning enthusiasm for floral art, its large green bell-shaped calyces encircling the actual flowers have elevated it to a favoured choice among flower arrangers. Beyond its appeal as a cut flower, it proves valuable for winter decorations. The fragrant flowers themselves hold an intriguing quality – they “make an excellent subject for skeletonizing,” as noted in a gardening dictionary from 1900.

Sowing & Growing
Sow them 3mm deep in moist, well-draining seed compost. Implement cold stratification by sealing the seeds in a plastic bag and chilling them at 3-5°C for two weeks. Subsequently, transfer them to a warm environment or propagate at 18-21°C. Expect germination within 14-21 days once placed in the warm setting; however, be aware that germination might be gradual. When the seedlings are sizable enough to handle, transplant them into 8cm pots and continue growing them in cooler conditions. Acclimatize the plants and, after the risk of frost has passed, plant them outdoors with a spacing of 30cm.
For optimal growth, this plant prefers a well-drained site in full sun. If the stems are exposed, staking may be necessary.
In terms of cultivation, for cutting purposes, harvest the flowers at their peak blooming stage. As they have hollow stems, if using oasis, inserting a wire into the hollow stem can be helpful. The stems will dry to a lovely straw colour.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
