Sowing & Growing

Sowing: Indoors, sow basil seeds in March and April, with plans to transplant from late May onward or once the threat of frost has subsided. Lightly sow the seeds into trays or pots with damp compost, covering them gently with finely sifted compost. Place the containers on a warm windowsill or in a greenhouse, ensuring the compost stays moist. Germination typically occurs in 7-10 days. Direct outdoor sowing is suitable from June onward.

Growing in pots: Basil thrives in warmth and sunlight, making pot cultivation advantageous for flexibility. Move the pots to suitable positions throughout the day, ensuring the plants are well-hydrated and sheltered from drying winds. Apply liquid feed every 2-3 weeks for optimal growth.

Growing in beds: For outdoor beds or dedicated herb gardens, ensure well-draining soil. Space seedlings 30cm apart, keeping them well-watered. Applying a mulch at the base helps prevent soil drying. Regular liquid feed ensures robust and healthy plant development.

Aftercare: When watering basil, avoid splashing the delicate leaves. Promptly remove weeds around the base, refraining from using insecticides or fungicides to prevent leaf contamination.

Harvesting: Continuous watering and regular leaf harvesting sustain basil growth throughout summer. Remove flower buds to stimulate more leaf growth. Freeze fresh leaves for later use, especially considering the challenge of winter cultivation. To preserve basil, cut the whole plants at the base and hang them upside down in a dry, warm location. Once fully dried, crumble the leaves and store them in a dry, airtight jar for later use.
