Tic Tac Mint (botanically classified as Mentha ‘Requiem Tic Tac’ or Mentha spicata ‘Requiem Tic Tac’) is a refined, specialty mint cultivar highly sought after by collectors and culinary gardeners. It is celebrated for its bright, clean, menthol-laced aroma that directly mimics the crisp, comforting sweetness of its namesake candy.
It is believed to be closely tied to (or a synonym for) ‘Carmagnola’, a historic variety originating in northern Italy that is famously grown for high-end confectionery and herbal remedies.
Foliage & Appearance: The plant produces vibrant, bright green leaves with neatly and finely serrated (toothed) margins. The foliage is densely packed along the stems, giving the plant a lush, full appearance.
Growth Habit: Unlike many sprawling wild mints, ‘Requiem Tic Tac’ is noted for its neat, upright, and structurally organized growth habit. It forms a beautifully contained, compact clump, making it less chaotic in the garden than standard spearmints.
Stems: It features classic, sturdy square stems that hold the heavy, dense foliage upright without flopping over.
The primary allure of this cultivar is its exceptional confectionery quality:
The Scent: It gives off a sharp, highly refreshing, and clear menthol fragrance.
The Taste: It delivers a smoother, milder, and sweeter peppermint-adjacent flavour. It lacks the aggressive, tongue-numbing harshness or bitterness found in some wild or heavy black peppermint varieties, offering a crisp, continental sweetness instead.
| Parameter | Preference |
| Sunlight | Full sun to partial shade. Sunny conditions optimize the premium essential oils in the leaves. |
| Soil & Water | Thrives in fertile, rich, and consistently moist, well-drained soil. |
| Container Friendliness | Excellent. Because of its modest spread, compact structure, and tidy habit, it is one of the absolute best mint varieties for container gardening. |
| Best For | Crafting delicate herbal teas, garnishing light pastries and summer fruits, or infusing into syrups where you want a clean, recognizable “sweet mint” signature without overtones of earthiness. |
Grower’s Note: Even though it behaves much better than wildly invasive varieties, it is still a true mint. If planted directly in an open herb garden, its underground rhizomes will eventually wander—keep it in a container on your patio or windowsill to appreciate its fragrance up close
