Very easy to grow from seed, this early variety is ideal for forcing to produce long, slender, pink-tinged stalks. For a deeper, red-coloured stem, leave the stems of Rhubarb ‘Champagne’ unforced – they will still be just as sweet and delicious! This old variety is particularly reliable and easy to grow. Height: 60cm (24″). Spread: 120cm (48″).

Sowing & Growing
Sow indoors January to March, prepare final planting site by digging in some well rotted organic matter. Prior to sowing soak seeds in water for 2 hours. Sow 25mm deep into modules of moist well-drained compost. Place on a sunny windowsill. Germination is rapid. For spring sowings plant out when 10cm tall, for autumn sowings plant out the following April. Allow 1M spacing.
Prefers any well-drained fertile soil in full sun. Do not over water as this can cause root rot. Fertilise after planting out. Cultivation Instructions Do not harvest in the first year after sowing. This will improve plant vigour. 2nd year remove stalks as required, cut at the soil line or simply pull out individually. Cover roots with a mulch over winter. Trim the crown to 4-5 buds every 4-5 years to improve yield.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
