Sowing & Growing
For an early kickstart, around mid to late April, plant a single seed edgeways at a depth of 1/2 inch in seed compost within a 3-inch pot. Temperature is key here; maintaining a soil temperature of at least 65°F (and preferably higher for optimal germination rates) is crucial. To achieve this, consider using a propagator, a well-heated greenhouse, or even an airing cupboard. It’s important to keep the soil consistently moist—water generously around the plants rather than directly over them. Ensure a weed-free environment to promote adequate air circulation. Once the fruits begin to swell, adopt a feeding schedule of every 14 days, using a tomato-type fertilizer, as these plants have a voracious appetite. If dealing with larger fruiting varieties, limit the number of fruits to 2-3 per plant (and for giant pumpkins, restrict it to 1 fruit).

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
